The Assistant Manager, Payroll is responsible for the execution, oversight, and continuous improvement of payroll operations. This role supports multiple payroll cycles and collaborates closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure proper system configuration, data integrity, and end-to-end payroll accuracy. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate, timely payroll delivery across a large, multi-entity organization. The Assistant Manager, Payroll will have meaningful influence over day-to-day payroll operations, staff development, and process consistency, while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that support a growing and complex business.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation, documentation, and disbursement of weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly payrolls.
  • Ensure payroll processing is accurate, timely, and aligned with company policies and established guidelines.
  • Maintain payroll system integrity and alignment with time and attendance, benefits, and downstream systems.
  • Manage all aspects of payroll processing, including new hires, terminations, pay changes, deductions, and garnishments.
  • Serve as a point of contact for employees at all levels regarding payroll questions, discrepancies, and inquiries.
  • Maintain the accuracy and confidentiality of payroll data and employee records.
  • Prepare payroll-related accruals and reconcile payroll activity to the general ledger.
  • Develop, maintain, and update payroll policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Hire, train, develop, and supervise payroll staff; provide coaching, performance feedback, and corrective action as needed.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to ensure effective system interfaces and issue resolution.
  • Contribute to team objectives and support ongoing process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field strongly preferred; equivalent experience (minimum 5 years) considered in lieu of a degree
  • 2+ years of payroll experience in a corporate or multi-location environment, including experience supervising, guiding, coaching, or overseeing payroll staff
  • Payroll certification (FPC, CPP) is a big plus
  • In-depth understanding of payroll regulations and tax laws
  • Hands-on experience with payroll and timekeeping systems such as Workday or similar platforms
  • Advanced proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and process discipline
  • Ability to oversee sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
